The Bitter Pill

I didn’t want to hear it. I resisted the truth of it. I didn’t like what the words implied.

What were those words?…

“Your emotions are under your control. Your emotions are your choice.”

I’m thinking, “Yeah right! You’re telling me that my misery is my doing? I think not! These words are bogus!”

The words imply that I am responsible for my worry, anxiety, depression, loneliness, anger, bitterness, and unhappiness. That it is my choice to feel negative!? It can’t be true.

But yes, indeed, the words are true. I just didn’t want to accept them. I just didn’t want to swallow that bitter pill. To accept responsibility for my emotions and the responsibility for who I’d become.

It was easier to blame the situation for my emotions. Easier to blame my life events and the things that have happened to me for my less-than-desirable character traits.

I mean, who would want to say that they had chosen to be miserable? That they had chosen to be a mean-ol’-bat.

Whether I want to admit it or not, the truth of the matter is that it was my choice!

There is a bright side to the truth of these words…”Your emotions are under your control. Your emotions are your choice.”

The bright side of the truth, then, is that your happiness is under your control. Happiness is your choice!

Just like the situations and circumstances don’t make you miserable, you make yourself miserable, it follows then that the situations and circumstances don’t make you happy, you make yourself happy.

This really is wonderful news! It means that your happiness actually has no strings attached. Your happiness really has no limits, no conditions…other than the ones you put on it. You can be happy no matter what happens or doesn’t happen to you, or what someone says or doesn’t say to you.

Michael Singer wrote in his book, The Untethered Soul, “You really only have one choice in this life…Do you want to be happy, or do you not want to be happy? It’s really that simple.”

Once you can accept the truth of these words, your true spiritual, emotional, and mental growth begins.

Swallowing this bitter pill means you will live with less stress and find more flow, ease, joy, and freedom in life.
