Advice You Need to Hear: Grow Up!

Okay. I’m just going to say it because maybe no one has told you this for awhile.

Grow up. Stop acting like a child and just grow the hell up.

We all need to hear this occasionally, especially if you are not telling yourself this regularly. Right now you maybe protesting, thinking, “I am grown up! I have adult problems!” Yeah, I bet you do. Adult problems like finances, work, kids, aging parents, relationships. I am not denying that you have adult problems. But I’m saying that you’re handling them like a child.

Come on, be honest. Have you ever been in line at the grocery store behind someone who is cashing in their coupons and you roll your eyes so hard you pull an eye muscle?

Have you ever had an internal temper tantrum because you were inconvenienced by someone changing your schedule for you?

Have you ever had a Chernobyl-sized meltdown over something like the toilet paper on the wrong way, burned toast or being late for a meeting?

Have you ever shouted something you didn’t mean at someone you were having a disagreement with?

Have you ever talked nasty about someone you don’t really like so that you could feel better about yourself?

Have you ever gotten really worked up to the point you almost forget to breathe when you even think about some of your adult problems?

Have you ever pretended a problem wasn’t there, as if ignoring it would make it disappear?

I think John A. Schindler put it best, “It is by trying to meet adult problems with childish reactions that we generate emotional stress.” He emphasized that emotional maturity is the solution for much of our stress.

So, I say this as lovingly as I can. Grow up.

Where in your life are you acting like a child?

What would change for you if you approached your problem with a calm, collected, rational mind and a kind, generous, loving heart?
