I would say that all of us want something in life. Something a little bit more (or a lot more) than what we have right now. But is that what we really want?
Try this exercise. Grab a pen and paper if you want.
Ask yourself right now, “What do I want?”
I want a new job.
I want to lose 5 pounds.
I want to travel.
I want a relationship.
I want more money.
Now pick just one thing.
I want a new job.
Ask yourself, “What is this going to get me?”
A new job is going to give me a chance to reach more people.
Ask yourself again, “What is this going to get me?”
Reaching more people is going to help me feel more fulfilled.
Continue asking yourself, “What is this going to get me?” until you can’t answer the question anymore. Your final answer is what you really want. Chances are, if you do this exercise with your entire list of things that you want, you are going to see a theme. This means that all the superficial things that you want in your life are really pointing to one thing! And that one thing could be considered your heart’s desire.
Imagine how different your life would be if instead of scrambling around trying to accomplish each of your little, individual wants, you focused all your energy on your big, main heart desire.
And the bonus of your heart desire is that it doesn’t only help you, it helps those around you, too.
What do you really want?
