Recently one of my best friends and mentors told me that she is going through a rough phase. Every night when she goes to bed she feels like her day was a waste. Every night she looks back on her day and feels like she wasn’t productive, she didn’t accomplish anything, she wasn’t who she wanted to be.
I think we all go through phases like this. I know I do. Where it feels like I’m hustling all day and getting nothing done. When I look back on the things I said, the actions I took and I think, “Wow, I could have handled that a hell of a lot better.”
After a conversation, at the end of the day, at the end of the week, or the end of the year it is great to look back and assess, “How’d I do?” Asking yourself how you did, assessing the productivity of your day, week, or year is a huge step toward self-improvement.
But what if you don’t like the answer. What if at the end of the day, you’re not impressed with yourself?
Don’t start at the end of the day.
Start at the beginning.
Before you start your day, ask yourself how YOU want it to go. Make a plan, not only of what you’re going to do during your day, but also how you are going to BE. Are you going to be compassionate, caring, loving? Are you going to be excited, enthused, determined? Are you going to be present, calm, relaxed? Ask yourself this before each conversation, interaction, task, chore, or action. How do you want to be?
Don’t start changing your day when it’s all over. Start at the beginning.
How do you want your day to go? How do you want to be? Who do you want to be?
